By the end of May this year, U.S. President Barack Obama signed a document asking the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to set standards for fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions for U.S. heavy-duty trucks. The goal is to reduce 20% of the U.S. truck emissions by 2015 and increase their fuel economy by 25%. This standard will be promulgated by July 30, 2011. What will the EPA and the NHTSA do to achieve this? What are the implications for US trucks? Glen Kedzie, Environmental Consultant, American Truck Association, said YHTSA and the EPA will work closely together to gain broad views and then launch a proven Program. ”I estimate that both EPA and NHTSA will implement the new standard based on the existing truck technology in the United States.
