早在九十年代初,李晓军就以他的那些不拘一格的写意花鸟为画坛所熟识。他的作品说是写意花鸟,其实除了荷花、水仙、石榴、牡丹、和平鸽、报喜鸟等传统的题材之外,现代社会中的红绿灯、汽车、电线杆等也时常有所表现。所以,对李晓军,并不能仅仅以花鸟画家视之。题材的广泛运用一方面反映出画家的画路比较开阔,另外也说明作为一位生长于现代大都市中的画家,李晓军的花鸟画是在传统与现代两个极点之间作有意识地深入与开拓。换句话说,现代题材的运用与画家植根传统的历练在李晓军作品中是并行不悖的。李晓军的花鸟画远绍赵之谦、虚谷、吴昌硕等近代大家,看他用笔
