以《古诗十九首》为代表的汉代文人五言诗,从内容上看,它继承了《诗经·国风》的优良传统,但是又不同于一般的歌谣,它是以抒写文人士子的世俗情怀、表现它们的生命意识为主体的创作。它既是男女之情的表露,更是对个体生命意识的张扬与悲叹。它的产生,标志着中国诗歌发展进入了一个新的时代,而且在艺术上取得了很高的成就,钟嵘赞赏它“文温以丽,意悲而远,惊心动魂,可谓几乎一字千金。”陆时雍在《诗镜总论》中评它:“深度浅貌、语短长情。”本文拟从以下四个方面对它作一些论述。
