In early ocean novels and other non-fiction genres, Cooper elaborated on the infinite possibilities for the United States to control sea power and become a maritime power. Inspired by the United States’ independence and the demands of big powers in the first half of the 19th century and the influence of the U.S. maritime nationalism, Cooper endeavored to create a powerful, state-as-a-maritime power identity in his works. He highly anticipated the emergence of a mighty U.S. navy and was full of confidence in developing U.S. maritime trade and shipping. He longs for the United States to dominate the sea one day, which fully reflects Cooper’s strong sea power. However, Cooper’s thought of sea power also reflects his fanatical imperialist consciousness of hegemony.
