《本草纲目》载;“猕猴桃其形似梨,其色如桃,而猕猴喜食,故有其名。”猕猴桃原系野生水果,清朝时已作商品上市,七十年代末期进行了人工栽培,把野生变为园林化。猕猴桃是落叶木质藤本,产于我国中部,南部广大地区。浆果夏秋季成熟,卵形或圆形,长2.5~5厘米,黄褐绿色。果味清香、酸甜爽口,含有维生素C、B和多种氨基酸、解朊酶、碳水化合物以及钙、镁、钾等矿物质。特别是维生素C,每100克鲜果中含量达400毫克,比柑桔高10倍,比苹果高30倍,故为果中珍品,在国外每果售价一美元。猕猴桃适应性强,容易栽培。一般种植三年结果,七、八年盛果,树龄高达四十年,也有达百年的。盛果期亩产可达1500~2000公斤,国内外市场都需要,是大有作为的新兴佳果。福建省古田县杉
