广安门为外城唯一向西开的门,与广渠门相对。明代称广宁门,又名彰义门(该门与金中都彰义门在同一轴线上)。清朝道光年间为避清宣宗旻宁之讳改为现名。形制如内城过去建造的城门讲究中轴对称,左安门与右安门位置相对,形制相同,广安门与广渠门也是位置相对,形制相同。直到乾隆三十一年,以该门为南方各省进京的主要通路,故提高城门规格,仿永定门城楼加以改建。广安门成为外城城门中仅次于永定门的城门建制。改建后的广安门城楼形制一如内城,重檐歇山三滴水楼阁式建筑,灰筒瓦绿琉璃瓦剪边顶,面阔三间通宽13.8米;进深一间,通进深6米;高17.6米;楼连城
