在中国,自周秦而至唐宋,人物画都曾占有重要位置。据画史记载,唐代张萱的画迹流传不少,代表作有《乳母将婴儿图》、《捣练图》、《虢国夫人游春图》等。《虢国夫人游春图》所描绘的是唐玄宗时的虢国夫人和宫女们春天乘马出游的场景。全卷构图气脉连贯,人物面额颇具情味。人物线条作游丝纹,细劲有力,没色匀称明净,反映出唐时仕女画的高超水准。继张萱之后,仕女画的代表画家首推周昉。他的仕女画体态浓艳丰肥,颇具风姿,成功地表现出仕女的内心精神世界,堪称一绝,并有“周家样”之誉。代表作品有《杨妃出浴》、《游春》、《纨扇》、《簪花仕女图》和《执扇仕女图》。仕女画在宋元时期,由于山水、花鸟渐成主导,故而人物画整体略比唐代逊色。明代中后期的人物画多仿效吴派唐
