美国卡内基·梅隆大学(CMU)机器人研究所向美国海军陆战队作战实验室(MCWL)交付12台改进的MKⅡ型“龙车”机动式地面传感器(MGS)样品。原始型方案已在加利福尼亚州和弗吉尼亚州匡蒂科的城内军事作战演练场作过试验。
该机动式地面传感器是用来代表小战术单位(连级或以下)进行系统的侦察、监视和目标捕获,以保障该战术单位能以直接或间接火力与敌方交战,还可以提供战场情况和兵力保护。卡内基·梅隆大学将该小型机器人包括传感器在内定价在1万美元/台。

MKⅡ型机动式地面传感器车重约5.5千克,载重4.5~5.5千克。车辆采用四轮驱动而非单独后双轮驱动。其它改进包括:增加一套彩色变焦距摄像机;控制、视频回路分别采用不同频带;新型天线;更符合人机工程的手动控制器以及白天易读的显示器。
“龙车”通常作业距离约200米。对于海军陆战队队员来说,使“龙车”抵达建筑物楼顶的标准方法是通过窗、门将其抛出,这就取消了对“龙车”的爬楼梯要求,简化了设计。
“龙车”没有悬挂装置,当从建筑物的三层阳台抛出或与障碍物相撞时,产生的加速度为40g的冲击力将由其轮胎和底盘所吸收。其行驶速度可达40千米/小时。即使失去一个或大部分车轮时,它仍可继续作业。
The Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is due to deliver 12 examples of the enhanced Dragon Runner MkⅡ Mobile Ground sensor (MGS) to the US Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory (MCWL). The original version has already undergone testing in California, and at the MOUT (military operations in urban terrain) facility in Quantico, Virginia.
The MGS is intended to conduct organic reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition on behalf of small tactical units (company level and below), supporting engagements by their direct-and indirect-fire weapons, and to contribute to situational awareness and force protection. CMU is aiming for a price of about US$10,000, including sensors.
The MKⅡ variant embodies improvements that the MCWL requested following a series of urban experiments and operational assessments using the original prototypes, development of which was co-funded by the Naval Research Laboratory and Office of Naval Research.
The MkⅡ weighs approximately 5.5kg, and can carry a payload of 4.5-5.5kg. All four wheels are driven rather than only the rear pair. Other enhancements include the addition of a color zoom camera, adoption of a different frequency band for the control/video link, a new antenna, a more ergonomic handheld controller, a daylight-readable display.
Dragon Runner normally operates out to a range of about 200m. The standard method of reaching the upper floors of a building is for a Marine to throw the robot through a window or door. This has removed the need for the vehicle to climb stairs, which simplifies the design.
It has no suspension, with shocks of up to 40g - which occur when it exits a building by driving off a third-floor balcony, or collides with an obstacle -being absorbed through the tires and chassis. Dragon Runner can achieve speeds of 40km/h or higher, and continues to operate even when missing a wheel or large chunks of the structure.
