How difficult is it to have a baby? In Beijing, perhaps only a phone call to the hospital is required, and careful and meticulous service will follow. In our mountainous rural areas, the process is still difficult to imagine. On March 7, 2005, the author went to Yulong in Yunnan, Qianjiang in Ningxia, Lund in Ningxia, Zhenghe in Fujian and Pingnan in 4 provinces and 5 counties. Nearly 60 villages in over 20 towns and villages far from the city, Pregnant women in pain or newlywed women just walked to the mountain waterway where they went to hospital for delivery or brought their children back home and felt the happiness and hardship of the early motherhood in contemporary rural China.
