抗日战争时期,咸(宁)崇(阳)蒲(圻)一带是鄂南山区抗日武装活动中心,它地跨咸宁、崇阳、通城、蒲圻、嘉鱼等县。在辖区范围内,先后建立中共咸崇蒲中心县委(即咸宁县委)、咸崇蒲县委、咸崇通(城)县委、咸武(昌)鄂(城)工委、嘉(鱼)蒲临(湘)工委、咸通(山)阳(新)工委和武嘉工委(即金水工委)。根据地和游击区总面积约6000平方公里,人口近60万。咸崇蒲抗日根据地,战略地位非常重要。粤汉铁路纵贯其东西,湘鄂公路横穿其南北,万里长江流经其西北,既是湘鄂赣水陆交通枢纽,又是中日正面交战的主体战场。武汉会战后,日军屯兵湘鄂边境,窥视南部中国,其前梯队指挥部就先后设在蒲圻和咸宁。八年抗战中,咸崇蒲人民在中国共产党的领导下,经历无数艰难险阻,进行艰苦卓绝的斗争,在敌人屯驻重兵、严密控制的近后方,插上一把尖刀,为夺取鄂南抗日斗争的胜利立下了不朽的功绩。

It is both the water, land and transportation hub of Hunan, Hubei and Jiangxi provinces and the main battlefield of the Sino-Japanese frontal fighting. After the wars in Wuhan, the Japanese troops stationed the border with Hunan, Hubei and Hubei Provinces and spied on southern China. The headquarters of the former echelon forces were successively located at Puyi and Xianning. During the eight-year war of resistance against Japan, the people of Xianchong-Pu, under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party, experienced countless difficulties and hardships and conducted arduous and arduous struggles.
