应美国旧金山友好城市委员会和夏威夷大学之邀请,上海昆剧团一行32人,于6月30日至7月13日,对旧金山和夏威夷两地行访问演出,获得了美国观众和行家的高度赞誉。这是上海昆剧团首次出访外国。昆剧能否为美国人民所欢迎和接受,还是个未知数。事实作了有力的回答。出访团抵达的当天下午,旧金山市市长范士丹在接见该团全体成员时,热情洋溢地说:“你们人未到,戏票早就卖光了。”果然,在演出中还可以看到不少人在排队等退票,戏票每张20至50元美金。出访团组成了最佳阵容,演出的剧目为:《游园》《问巫》(根据莎翁名作《马克白》改编的《血手记》之一折)(《钟馗嫁妹》《下山》《小宴》《百花赠剑)《活捉》
