Some of the important concepts related to flattened Gaussian beams, such as field distribution and beamwidth, are analyzed physically. The two-dimensional flat-topped Gaussian beam is further extended to the three-dimensional case, and the symmetric transformation of the three-dimensional flattened Gaussian beam, including equal beamwidths in the x and y directions and equal curvature radii in the z plane, has been studied in detail.
