本文作者阿贝尔·雷慕沙(Abel-Remusat,1788—1832),法国著名汉学家。1815年,年仅27岁的雷慕沙担任了法兰西学院“汉文与鞑靼文、满文语言文学讲座”第一任教授,也正是这一讲座的设立,标志着专业汉学在法国的建立。雷慕沙一生著作颇丰,其有关中国经典的研究与译文评述被收录到他的论文集《亚洲杂纂》(Melanges.Asiatiques)中,于1825年在法国巴黎出版。本文译自他的两篇评述文章,分别是对英国汉学家马士曼(Joshua Marshman)英译《论语》和法国汉学家儒莲(Stanislas Julien)所译《孟子》两部译著的评介。对于两位汉学家的译著,雷慕沙有褒扬,亦有批判。对于马士曼所译《论语》,雷慕沙采取一种批判的角度进行评介。当然,雷慕沙也肯定了马士曼译本的优点以及译者为此付出的诸多努力。而对于儒莲所译《孟子》,雷慕沙将之与卫方济(Francois No(e|¨)l)译本进行比较,更多的是对儒莲译本的褒奖。整体来看,雷慕沙的评述客观而中肯。
