本草是中国古代劳动人民和科学家在利用自然、改造自然并同自然界作斗争中创造的一门药物科学。这门具有中国特色的药物科学传遍了全世界,成为人类同疾病作斗争的有力武器。据史书记载,“本草”一词产生于公元前三十一年(见《汉书》成帝纪)。本草书在日本传播很广、很多,中国每出一本几乎都要流传到日本。据日本有关书籍记载,隋统一中国之前,主要经过朝鲜半岛;隋统一中国日本首次派遣使节——小野妹子来华,以后则通过海路直接传入。为了帮助广大读者了解这方面的情况,并为进一步研究提供线索,我将《日本博物学史》、《明治前日本药物学史》、《明治前日本生物学史》和《日本医事年表》等书籍中,刊载本草的有关内容,按年代顺序编摘如下: 公元602年,百济僧观勒到日本,献有历本、天文地理和方术书。这本方术书可能是陶弘景的《神农本草经集注》。
