This paper first proposed the definition of oil shale, at the same time it shows the difference between coal and carbonaceous shale and delineation. The formation of oil shale and its macroscopic characterization are described. The classification and detailed description of the organic rock microscopic components are also described. The article also outlines the comprehensive utilization of oil shale and its prospects.
