饮食治疗是治疗糖尿病的基本措施,大约有五分之二的轻型病人单纯用饮食治疗就可奏效,即使注射胰岛素或口服降糖药的病人也都需要饮食治疗。饮食治疗的意义是,通过合理地调配病人每天所吃的主、副食品的数量和内容来控制血糖、尿糖,使之接近或达到正常值,并防止糖尿病并发症的发生与发展。指导病人掌握这方面的知识是做好饮食治疗的关键。这项工作既不能过于繁琐,也不宜过于简单。繁琐则病人难于接受和坚持,过于简单则不易达到饮食
