葱与蜂蜜配伍运用于临床,先贤曾留下许多宝贵的经验。如《全幼心鉴》、《圣济总录》、《本草纲目》、《本草原始》、《济急仙方》、《百一选方》等籍中均有记载。经现代药理研究,葱内富含挥发油,其中主要是葱蒜辣素,也叫葱蒜杀菌素,能刺激汗腺,故有发汗作用。还含有环蒜氨酸和硫氨基酸,经人体及动物实验,有消散血块和增强纤维蛋白溶解活性的作用,并对痢疾杆菌、大肠杆菌、链球菌等都有杀灭或抑制作用。蜂蜜,近年来通过研究发现,它含有人体所需要的蛋白质、糖、酸及多种氨基酸,对溶血性链球菌、葡萄球菌、变形杆菌、白色念珠球菌有一定的杀菌能力。
