Aircraft fired long-range weapons have gone through three stages. The first phase was the type of weapon developed by Germany during the Second World War. The second phase was the U.S. military’s war against Vietnam in the early 1970s. The third phase is the precision-guided weapon used in the Gulf War in 1991. Long-range weapons have many advantages. First, launching aircraft do not need to overfly the target, so they are not fired by the firepower of the ATF around the target area and can be fired from a vantage point where they are defenseless or less defensive. Second, it takes a simple and easy job to get the firing position and direct the weapon to the target (with the aircraft firing weapons around the target and the crew distributing their attention between accurately firing weapons and keeping themselves
