As the “Guarding Cantonese” incident intensified in Guangzhou, as far away as the German capital Berlin, local artists were also shouting loudly to defend the local art site Tacheles. Over the past 20 years, this building, built of reinforced concrete and graffiti paint, has been home to many artists and designers’ workshops. After they fell to the Berlin Wall, they saved Tacheles from the list of demolitions in Berlin and used the arts and ideas to prosper the abandoned wasteland, becoming a world-renowned tribe of artists. But now, these artists are likely to be driven out of the base because they can not renew their contracts with building owners, and Tacheles faces the threat of real estate developers.
