西欧铁路网密度很高,铁路运输业相当发达。其中,西德每百平方公里拥有铁路11.3公里,法国为6.4公里,英国为6.9公里,意大利为5.3公里,荷兰为7公里,比利时为12.5公里。80年代中期,西欧铁路运输业曾受到航空运输业的冲击,运输量曾几度下降,每年平均降低约1％,而航空运输量却增长了约70％。但80年代末以来,西欧高速铁路迅猛发展,加之航空运输业受飞机场承受能力的限制,促使铁路运输量又有所回升。据国外专家预测,
High density railway network in Western Europe, the railway transport industry is quite developed. In the mid-1980s, the railroad industry in Western Europe was hit by the air transport industry. The volume of transport dropped slightly, averaging about 1% a year, while the volume of air traffic increased by about 70%. However, the rapid development of Western European high-speed railway since the late 1980s, coupled with the air transport industry being limited by the capacity of the airspace, led to a pickup in rail traffic. According to foreign experts predict,
