清西陵陵區內現存古松兩萬多株,多是在營建帝后陵寢時栽植的,以海栽和行栽等多種方式栽在建築物旁、神道兩側和陵寢附近的丘陵地带。 為了維護好這些林木,清廷在主管西陵行政和司法事務的西陵內務府設有專人負責管理,守護各陵的八旗兵中另设樹戶多人,常年駐守於松林深處的巡房中,就近巡視護林,嚴禁砍伐破壞,注意消滅火災。清政府為綠化陵區,撥有專款。如道光八年,就曾撥銀一萬一千零五十両用於植樹。道光十三年,又補栽樹木一萬零三百七
