This paper examines the extent to which natural materials (also known as real materials) influence the classroom motivation of Japanese college students in order to find effective ways to teach blended language language classes in universities. This paper collects and analyzes quantitative data mainly based on eight motivational items in the motivational questionnaire and qualitative data focusing on learning journal entries and learners’ comments in semi-structured interviews. The null hypothesis tests on the questionnaire showed that natural materials were more effective than first grade students in motivating second and fourth grade students compared to artificial materials. This study also explores the relationship between the “interesting” and the “meaningful” teaching materials themselves, seeking the most effective way to utilize natural materials. This article also discusses other possible factors such as activities and topics. The conclusion of this paper shows that the proper use of natural materials, especially “interesting” materials, can help mix freshmen in first-class college to effectively improve their second language motivation. Finally, this article discusses the challenges encountered in this study and makes recommendations for future research.
