极少见诸古代文献的湖北瓷窑,在上个世纪末,于湖北武汉市、鄂州市和大冶市交界的环梁子湖及斧头湖等地勘探和发掘出大量古代瓷窑窑址。但在近年来诸多记录和研讨湖北古代瓷窑的研究中,由于窑址名字的不同性导致了许多信息误差以及信息不对称的情况,使得许多学者对于湖北地区的窑址分布以及数量没有客观的认识。经过对产区在历史上行政划分的梳理,结合考古命名的惯例,从两个角度对其命名比较合理:在考古学方面,使用\"湖泗窑址群\"这一概念;从中国陶瓷史的角度,适用\"武昌窑\"来代表湖北瓷窑产区。
