Diazoxide (DAX), a derivative of phenothiazine, is chemically very similar to thiazide diuretics and is a rapidly acting potent antihypertensive drug. Mechanism of action The antihypertensive effect of this medicine is entirely due to its ability to directly relax the smooth muscle of the small arteries, reducing systemic vascular resistance throughout the body. This may be the result of DAX antagonizing the effect of calcium on smooth muscles. The drug has minimal effect on the volume of blood vessels, no direct effect on cardiac function, does not affect cardiovascular autonomic reflexes. But when the drug reduces arterial pressure, it will make the baroreceptor excited, reflecting the heart rate, left ventricular ejection speed, heart
