I. INTRODUCTION The buffer is a standard size device in a railway vehicle traction device to absorb the load acting on the vehicle. Its purpose may include the protection of goods and passengers, but only in the area of traction of heavy-duty mineral products, to protect the traction device and vehicle structure from overloading. Figure 1 shows the normal position of the buffer. Newman Hill Mining has about 2,300 gondola cars dedicated to transporting iron ore from the mine area to the port. At the port, the gondola is emptied automatically on the dumper. The gondola weighs 125t and operates on a train of 138 cars. Under such circumstances, the load applied to the coupler can naturally be expected to be higher than that encountered under moderate operating conditions. At the beginning of the Newman Hill Project, the company could not expect these loads to be generated
