This article describes the design and characteristics of an improved splitter gauge for ultra-high vacuum measurements. The grid's beginning structure prevents x-rays from directly striking the ion collector, except for the few indirect x-rays that reflect on each electrode. The sensitivity factor is about 8.3 x 10-2 Pa-1 (11 torr-1) at 1 milliampere electron flow equivalent to the residual gas. The achievable pressure measurement ranges from 1 × 10-6 to 9 × 10-10 Pa (1 × 10-8 to 7 × 10-12 Torr). It has been demonstrated that this regulatory x-ray limit is lower than the nude B-A gauge. The article also describes an improved regulatory design that can be used for high vacuum pressure measurements by a simplified method of mounting the cap electrode on top of the grid.
