In the summer of 1985, I discovered the true meaning of life, as a young DJ in San Francisco.When you are learning, like a kid, you copy adults and other peo-ple around you.So, with scratching, I’d copy all the other DJ’s.A lot of people complain about DJ’s who bite, but that’s how you learn.I would always copy this guy named Mixmaster Mike.
I would go to his house, or go to all his parties and just watch him.I’d sit in the crowd in my fake Michael Jackson red white and black outfit, white gloves; all the wannabe1 breakers wore this stuff at the time.I would watch what he did, and then I would go home and practice what I had seen all night.I was re-ally trying to be like Mike.Anytime I would catch onto his style, he’d invent another style.Then I got closer to that one, and he’d make a new one up!
He told me once before, “Oh, you gotta be original.You have to come up with your own style.This is Hip-Hop, there are no rules.”
Someone would always ask me, “Man, why are you trying to sound like Mixmaster Mike?”
I’d get really mad and spit back, “What are you talking about?!No way am I trying to sound like Mike.”
Well, one day Mike moved away.I was asking myself, now, who am I going to bite from?Who am I going to copy my stuff from?
So I’d sit in my room alone, with my equipment and imagine what Mike would do if he was over my house.I’d say to myself, you know, Mike would probably scratch something like this, and create a vi-sion of the different scratch techniques he might use.It started working.Pretty soon, guys would come to my shows and say, now, this guy is coming up with a pretty good new style.
Then my imagination took me even further.I would ask myself what would the Scratch style of the best DJ in the universe sound like?What about an alien2 from another planet?How would he battle?So, I’d work on that style.By letting my fantasies run wild, I gave birth to unorthodox3 scratch styles that people weren’t doing at the time.
At that point I began to make my own rules.

以前,他曾经告诉过我:“你必须是原创者。必须有自己的风格。这是街头文化,这儿没有规则。”
总会有人问我:“嗨,你为什么要试图模仿米克斯马斯特·迈克的表演手法呢?”
每当我听到这样的问话,我就会变得暴跳如雷,然后毫不客气地回敬一句:“你在说什么?!我没有试图模仿迈克的表演。”
后来,有一天,迈克离开了那里。我问自己,现在,我要再去学谁?我要再去照搬谁的表演手法?
于是,我独自一人坐在我的房间里,对着我的设备,想像着如果迈克在我的房里表演,他会怎么做。我对自己说,你知道,迈克也许会像这样子擦碟,因而创造出一个他可能会用的不同的擦碟的手法。这个方法开始起作用了。没过多久,伙计们来看我的演出,看过之后都会说,现在,这个家伙拿出了一个非常好的新风格。
我的想像带着我继续前进。我会问自己,世界上最好的DJ的刮擦风格听起来会是什么样子呢?一个来自另外一个星球的外星人又会怎么样呢?他会如何去表演呢?于是,我开始创造那个风格。我让自己的幻想疯狂地奔跑,最后终于创造出人们在那时候还不会使用的那些非传统的擦碟的风格。
从那时候起,我开始建立起自己的规则。
