Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a chronic progressive central nervous system disorder in children and adolescents caused by the persistent infection with measles virus. The measles virus contains L, P, NP, H, F, and M6 major proteins, of which M protein is the major intramembrane protein responsible for assembly of the virus. The other antibodies to measles virus in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid of patients with SSPE have high titers of antibodies, while M protein antibodies are relatively absent.
