【Abstract】zodiac is an important part of Chinese culture， but there is no uniform translation of animal words in English.From the perspective of lexicology， probes into the proper translation of Chinese zodiac words in English and Chinese.

There is a close relationship between language and culture. Culture is the soil of language and language is the carrier of culture.Generally speaking， the basic way of life of human beings is the same， and the rational thinking of human beings also has many commonalities.
Chapter I The origin of the zodiac
The appearance of zodiac animal in the literature can be traced back to the Western Chou Dynasty.Book of songs·Xiaoya ·Jiri There are “auspicious days of the afternoon， that is， the difference of my horse”， which means the good day of the auspicious day of the boxer noon， the good day for the leap of the horse that Wu Ma corresponds to Wu Ma in the present Zodiac.
Chapter II The differences between Chinese zodiac and Chinese zodiac in English and Chinese
Since English and Chinese come from two different languages， it makes it difficult to translate each other.In addition， The cultural differences between the Chinese and British peoples are inevitable because of their unique cultural characteristics such as regional ecology， historical traditions， religious beliefs， traditional concepts， aesthetic tastes and so on.In short， in different cultures， some words have different cultural connotations and national Taking words representing animal names as an example， words indicating the same animal often have different meanings in their respective languages， while words indicating different animals sometimes have the same or similar meanings.
Chapter III Translation and Analysis of Chinese zodiac Animals
From the Chinese point of view， the twelve animal names belong to the basic words in the modern Chinese lexical system， and in Chinese these animal names are all expressed by a single word.From the cognitive point of view， they are all basic category words.we should try to maintain consistency in form and convey Chinese cultural characteristics in a sense.
1.Ox or bull？
Chinese “cattle” is one of the six animals， mammal， ruminant， big body， toe end hoof， head has a pair of horns， tail tip has long hair.Strength， easement， milk or meat， skin， hair， bone and so on are useful.It is often likened to stubbornness or pride， and also to those who are driven.Cattle are a symbol of industry in Chinese culture. In English there are words such as oxo Bulllock cow heifer calf.First of all， from a semantics point of view， this set of synonyms refer to the same kind of livestock： cattle， but in a common basic sense， these words have different meanings.
.Translation of ox into ox is closer to the strong， hardworking image and cultural metaphor of ox， so it is more conducive to cultural exchange.
2.Chinese Dragon or Long？
The dragon is the only animal in the zodiac that is not real.Dragon has a long history， found more than 6000 years ago in Hubei Huang Mei “pebble plastic dragon” image has fish tail， talon， snake body， deer head， dragon head high， long horns after the Yang， open mouth curved neck.Some scholars believe that the dragon is the totem of ancient Chinese nationality.
But Westerners’ association and view of the dragon is completely different from that of the Chinese.The traditional “dragon” of the West is quite different from the dragon in the Chinese mind. In addition to this， the beast is also England’s patron saint St. George （St. George） to kill the evil evil.
3.Pig or boar
First of all， from the perspective of semantics， pigs belong to the upper word.Pigs are also one of the “six animals， ” so from a cognitive point of view， the Chinese zodiac pig should be a domestic pig， not a wild boar. The English meaning of boar is wild boar， boar； especially a fattened pig； pig is a unpleasant or offensive persona； a person who is dirty or greedy.An unpleasant or obnoxious person， a greedy or filthy person.

Translation is essentially a cross-cultural communication， the purpose of which is to communicate and spread ideas and culture.Language translation cannot be carried out independently from culture and must be guided by cultural consciousness. The vacancy in cultural words between Chinese and English is an inevitable phenomenon. In this case， A reasonable transliteration is a necessary means to develop one’s own culture.
