烟草因含烟碱,故可用来杀虫。一般红花烟草含烟碱3％,黄花烟草含烟碱高达10—18％。而烟碱易溶于水,桑树根能吸收土壤中的烟碱,并把它输送到叶片中。烟碱对家蚕毒性很大,致死剂量每头蚕为6—8微克。每片桑叶含5一10微克烟碱就是以引起家蚕中毒死亡。所以,桑园附近不能种烟,烟草生产区不能发展桑蚕,两者相隔距离至少在100米以上。

While nicotine is readily soluble in water, mulberry roots can absorb nicotine in the soil and transport it to the leaves. Nicotine is very toxic to silkworms, lethal dose of 6-8 micrograms per head silkworm. Each mulberry leaf containing 5 to 10 micrograms nicotine is to cause silkworm poisoning death. Therefore, mulberry can not plant near the tobacco, tobacco production areas can not develop silkworms, the distance between the two at least 100 meters above.
