Objective: To investigate the effect of radiofrequency, microwave ablation and chemotherapy alone on quality of life (QOL) in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer. Methods: One hundred and twenty patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer who were treated in our department from August 1, 2009 to July 31, 2011 were divided into three groups: group A: radiofrequency ablation group; group B: Skin puncture microwave ablation treatment group; C group: chemotherapy alone. The quality of life of patients was assessed before and after treatment and 1 month after the end of treatment by using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Core Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ-C30) Evaluation. Results: At 1 month after treatment, all functional indexes of A and B groups showed no significant difference compared with that before treatment (P> 0.05). Only dyspnea score of symptom index was significantly higher than that before treatment (P <0.05) The physical and emotional functions in group C were significantly lower than those before treatment (P <0.05). There was no significant difference in cognitive function, general condition, role and social function between the two groups before treatment (P> 0.05), fatigue, nausea and vomiting , Dyspnea, loss of appetite and clinical symptoms of diarrhea were significantly higher than those before treatment (P <0.05). There was no significant difference between the other symptom scores and before treatment (P> 0.05). At 3 months after treatment, all three functional indexes had no significant difference compared with those before treatment (P> 0.05). The scores of nausea, vomiting, dyspnea and loss of appetite in group C were significantly higher than those before treatment (P < 0.05). The scores of dyspnea in groups A and B were still significantly higher than those before treatment (P <0.05). Conclusion: Compared with chemotherapy alone, radiofrequency ablation and percutaneous microwave ablation in the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer have a small effect on the quality of life of patients.
