About a third of births in parts of the Tucson Va-lley Valley in the United States in 1973 reported congenital heart disease. In 1981, it was also found that groundwater consumed by people in the area was mainly contaminated with trichlorethylene and small amounts of vinylidene chloride and chromium. This article investigated the prevalence of CHD among children born to mothers who had been exposed to contaminated water and compared them to those who did not. Methods The range of the Tucson Valley contaminated area was first determined. The number of congenital heart disease diagnosed in the valley from January 1969 to March 1987 was estimated. The diagnosis of congenital heart disease was based on cardiac catheterization, surgery, autopsy, and echocardiography
