咸丰皇帝生前先后立了慈安、慈禧两个皇后。他死后,孝德显贵妃又被晋尊为皇后。这三位皇后,只有孝德显皇后随葬定陵地宫,其余二位,则在定陵东侧选址建陵,称为定东陵。慈安陵称普祥峪定东陵,居于西侧;慈禧陵称菩陀峪定东陵,居于东侧。两陵用一道马槽沟隔开。两座定东陵的基址于同治十二年(1873年)选定,同年八月二十日破土兴工。到光绪五年(1879年)六月二十二日一起竣工。普祥峪定东陵用银266万余两,菩陀峪定东陵用银227万两。两陵建筑规制相同,均比清初所建的孝东陵增添了下马牌、神道碑亭等建筑。这些建筑,华贵精美,反映出清末统治者生活的奢侈腐化。尽管如此,慈禧仍不满足。慈安死
