Mauritius is a fascinating multicultural country. Famous white sandy beaches and bright blue seas are characteristic of the island. The tourism industry in Mauritius has experienced tremendous growth contributing to the strengthening of the economy.
This research seeks to capture the main elements that make Mauritius an attractive tourist destination. Moreover, in this thesis the positive and negative factors affecting tourism in Mauritius as well as the role that the govemment plays in promoting the tourist industry are analyzed thoroughly. Furthermore, strategies are suggested to improve the Mauritian tourism sector. To further promote the growth of the tourism industry in Mauritius, the govemment should focus more on sustainable tourism and infrastructural development in the country.
The primary data was collected by conducting interviews and survey question naires were filled inside the country by domestic tourists in 2010.The secondary data was collected through the Ministry of Tourism and Central Statistics Office, Mauritius. However, recognizing the limitations of this study, it is recommended that further research be carried out on qualitative aspects, using in depth interviews of the stakeholders in theindustry. In addition it is recommended that the various universities of Mauritius and the tourism industry establish formal collaboration where research as this could be used to guide policy by the govemment considering the importance of tourism in the countrys economy.
