  Objective To evaluate the role of gonadal hormone in the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase-1/2 (ERK1/2) in paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of gonadectomized rats after intraperitoneal lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administration.Methods Female rats were randomly divided into five groups:intact (INT),bilaterally ovariectomized (OVX),OVX+estrogen (E),OVX+progesterone (P) and OVX+E+P groups.From male rats,three groups were prepared:intact (INT),bilaterally orchidectomized (ODX) and ODX+testosterone (T) groups.After intraperitoneal administration of LPS,plasma levels ofACTH,estradiol (E2),P and T were measured by using radioimmnoassay (RIA).Immunohisto-chemical staining showed the phospho-ERK1/2 (p-ERK1/2) in PVN.Results The content of ACTH induced by LPS was significantly higher in female than in male rats.Gonadectomy can abolish this sexual difference in both sexes.
