  Dental caries and dental erosion are two major problems of oral health.In comparison to dental caries, which have been well controlled by fluoride, dental erosion, tooth mineral loss due to the acid, has not been paid sufficient attention either by dental professionals or by the patients.Currently, the representative strategy to prevent dental erosion is to use fluoride additive,which can form less soluble mineral.However, overtaking an excess amount of fluoride may cause adverse impact such as fluorosis.Therefore, it is imperative to develop an alternative non-fluoride material for tooth erosion prevention.The goal of this project is to develop an alternative non-fluoride polymeric material, which can effectively prevent dental erosion, but will eliminate fluorosis side effect.Inspired by the effective erosion preventing effect from caseinphosphopeptide, the strategy is to synthesize a new block copolymer consisting with a hydrophilic polyacrylic acid (PAA) block and a hydrophobic poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) block.The block copolymers were synthesized via reversible addition fragmentation polymerization (RAFT).The molar fractions of acrylic acid (AA) and the molecular weight of PMMA-b-PAA were controlled from 0.25 to 0.94 and from 10 kDa to 90 kDa, respectively.While UV-Vis and FTIR spectra confirmed the binding of the block copolymer to HAP, polymer treatment reduced the calcium released from HAP by 30% in comparison with the unprotected samples.SEM observation confirmed that polymer treatment could effectively protect enamel morphology from acid erosion.
