Non-invasive Assessment of Age,Gender and Exercise Effects on Skeletal Muscle:Initial Experience wit

  Purpose To prospectively investigate age-,gender-and exercise-related changes in the fast-twitch and slow-twitch skeletal muscle(i.e.,tibialis anterior and soleus muscles)of the calves of healthy volunteers with T1ρ MRI.Materials and Methods The study was approved by the institutional review board.A total of 58 healthy volunteers,divided to the groups of young(N=21,12 male,23.5±1.8 years),middle-aged(N=23,13 male,38.0±5.6 years)and elderly(N=26,15 male,55.7±3.8 years)underwent T1ρ MRI scan of their calves.To compare the difference of physical activity,the volunteers after trained by endurance sport(N=9,male,mean age,43.9±3.9 years)and untrained(N=9,male,mean age,44.3±2.9 years)were recruited.Differences in the T1ρ relaxation times were assessed.The correlation coefficients for the association between T1ρ relaxation time and the age or physical activity scores were calculated.Results The average T1ρ relaxation times of the tibial anterior muscle in three groups were significantly lower compared to the soleus muscle(P<0.0001).The higher T1ρ relaxation times of the tibial anterior and soleus muscles in the elderly volunteers(P<0.0001)and in the females(P<0.05)indicated significant age-dependent differences with respect to the type of skeletal muscle and gender.The higher T1ρ relaxation times in the soleus muscle and lower in the tibial anterior muscle after trained by endurance sport(P<0.05)suggested muscle fiber type change after exercise.Conclusion T1ρ relaxation times can be used to differentiate differences in the tibial anterior and soleus muscles as well as age-,gender-and exercise-related changes.T1ρ MRI is a promising and non-invasive tool for evaluating physiological and pathological changes and muscle response to therapeutics.
