The paper presents the effect of multiple Yb2O3-Re2O3-MgO(RE: La,Gd,Yb,Lu)additives on the hotpressed silicon nitride.Through the different Re ion sizes matches,it can tailor the microstructure and weak the grain boundary to increase the strength and toughness.The Yb-La bearing sample(small-big ion radius)resulted in weaked grain boundary,the flexure strengths was above about 852 MPa,the fracture toughness was above about 11.84 MPa·m1/2,the Yb-Gd bearing sample(small-medium ion radius)resulted in strong grain boundary and second phase of Yb4Si2N2O7,the flexure strengths was above about 686 MPa and the fracture toughness was just about 5.75 MPa·m1/2,the Yb-Lu bearing sample(small-small ion radius)resulted in weaked grain boundary,the flexure strengths was above about 905 MPa and the fracture toughness was above about 9.44 MPa·m1/2.The grain boundary phase with different RE ion size matches have significantly influence on the second phase and mechanical properties.
