Using two typical cases of earlyonset fetal growth restriction we will review the following topics: common definitions of fetal growth restriction, its pathophysiology and etiology.The use of sonography in the diagnosis and management (including estimated fetal weight, head circumference to abdominal circumference ratio, femur length to abdominal circumference ratio, fetal transcerebellar diameter as a predictor of gestational age, and oligohydramnios), Doppler studies commonly used in the diagnosis and management of fetal growth restriction (such as umbilical artery, middle cerebral artery and doctus venosous) will be presented and discussed.Finally, we will discuss the role of nucleated red blood cells in differentiating the growth restricted from the small, but otherwise, healthy fetus and commonly used management and delivery options.
