Fluid licking in mice is a rhythmic behavior that is under the control of an autonomous central pattern generator (CPG) located in the brainstem.C57BL/6J (B6) and DBA/2J (D2) strains vary greatly in lick rate, with D2 adults possessing a shorter interlick interval.First, we examined the effects of peripheral or environmental influences on the lick CPG, and concluded that it operates autonomously, in the absence of sensory feedback.We next measured lick rates to water and a sweet stimulus, sucrose, in a family of 63 BXD strains, along with their parents (B6 and D2) and F1 hybrids.
