The cellular prion protein (PrPc) has been shown to participate in copper metabolism, signal transduction, neuroprotection, and anti-apoptosis even though its physiological functions remain elusive except that this protein is required for the pathogenesis of prion diseases.Accruing evidences show that PrP is up-regulated in tumors of liver cancer, breast cancer, gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, melanoma, and pancreatic cancer patients and its over-expression predicts poor prognosis of the patients.
