Lands, fifty five year ago, indicated that phospholipids are first synthesized from glycerol-3-phosphate in the de novo pathway, originally described by Kennedy and Weiss (Kennedy pathway), and undergo maturation in a deacylation-reacylation remodeling pathway (Lands cycle). The asymmetrical distribution of fatty acids at the sn-1 and sn-2 positions of phospholipids is maintained in part by the Landscycle.
