Preparation and optical properties of spin-coated films of PVBCz-b-PDMAEMA star block copolymers

  A series of different PVBCz-b-PDMAEMA star block copolymers with different arm numbers and PDMAEMA block lengths were successfully synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using the PVBCz homopolymers with low degree of polymerization (degree of polymerization per arm is 6-8) as macro-initiators and DMAEMA as the second monomer.The degree of polymerization of PDMAEMA segment was available in a relatively wide range (30-140) with narrow molecular weight distribution (PDi<1.42).The ultraviolet-visible absorption and fluorescence emission properties of different PVBCz-b-PDMAEMA star block copolymers spin-coated films were investigated.The experimental results showed that both the arm number and PDMAEMA segment length of the block copolymers had significant effects on the properties.The maximum UV-vis absorption peaks of 1-arm PVBCz-b-PDMAEMA blue-shifted from 295 nm to 292 nm as the PDAMEMA chain lengthening, and the other absorption peaks exhibited the approximate blue-shift.The FL intensity of emission peak at 405 nm of the star block copolymers weakened gradually as the arm numbers increase, while the intensity of 1-arm block copolymers diminisheed as the PDAMEMA chain lengthens.The unique properties could be easily adjusted to meet various specific practical demands by varying the arm number and the block length, which is of great research and practical significance.
