Genetic alterations and cytopathological heterogeneity are hallmarks of cancer,in particular glioblastoma multiforme (GBM),contributing to the intractability of the disease. The hypothesis that some cancers (including GBM) arise from a tumorigenic subpopulation denoting cancer stem cells (CSC) portends a unique developmental perspective for better understanding cancer pathogenesis and for designing targeted therapy.
