Mineral froth flotation is a special and efficient separation technology,by which the mineral particles with hydrophobic surfaces are readily attached by bubbles in aqueous media and subsequently floated,collected,and removed.In comparison,the mineral particles with hydrophilic surfaces do not attach to bubbles and sink to the bottom,forming a tailing.To increase the difference in wettability between the valuable and gangue mineral particles for a facile separation,traditionally,specific regulators such as surfactants and depressants are introduced into the particles-water system so as to strengthen or decrease their hydmphobicity by selectively adsorbing on respective particles.Among these additives,starch is a widely-used depressant,due to its high natural abundance,ready availabifity,low cost,environmental friendship,and renewability.Of particular to the researchers is the high number of hydroxyl groups therein,which lend the polymeric product strong hydrophilicity as well as convenient modification.It is accordingly anticipated that starch might be a good candidate for the depression of diaspore in reverse flotation.
