  Silica-gold core-shell type particles are quite attractive because of their unique optical properties and potential biomedical applications.A widely-used preparation method of Au nanoshells is the seed-mediated growth,in which Au seeds decorated on the core silica surface grow into a shell by the reduction of Au ions.In our previous study,we developed a flow synthetic process by applying a microreactor to the seed-mediated growth,and successfully synthesized gold nanoshells with less synthetic steps than batch type processes.1 However,the growth mechanism of gold shells is unclear,which has prevented the control in shell thickness and structure.In the present study,we conducted a combined analysis of inline optical measurements,simulations of plasmon absorption,and TEM observation of freeze-dried samples to clarify the growth mechanism.
