Fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas provide more than three quarters of the world s energy today. In addition to producing most of the transportation fuel, petroleum is also the feedstock used for the production of over 95% of the carbon-centaining chemicals used in our society. But in less than two decades petroleum production is unlikely to meet the growing needs of humanity and natural gas resources will be increasingly inaccessible.
