　　Toyano lagoon,located in the center of Niigata city,Japan,had experienced serious deterioration of the water quality during the course of urbanization and modernization of agriculture in 1970s.The value of chemical oxygen demand (COD) reached three times as high as environmental standard (5mg/l) in 1977due to the effluent of swage from Niigata city and the agricultural drainage water.
