Arachidonic acid (ARA) plays important roles in regulating metabolism of aquatic animal. Two series of isonitrogenous and isoenergetic experimental diets based on either fish oil (A 0.44,B 0.56,C 0.87,D 1.02 and E 0.28 mg ARA/g diet respectively) or blended vegetable oil (F 0.19,G 0.38,H 0.48 and I 1.44 mg ARA/g diet respectively),both with constant saturated fatty acids (SFA),mono-unsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) contents and n-3/n-6 ratios, were fed to the white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei for assaying the effect of dietary ARA level concomitantly high or low dietary EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid,20∶5n-3) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid,22∶6n-3) contents on the growth performance and fatty acid profiles of the shrimp.
