During the year 2012 we have studied 23,106 deliveries and among them 2,491 cesarean sections in rural health facilities in Tanzania. There are no trained doctors in any of these places. All cesarean sections were carried out by "non-physician clinicians" / "associate clinicians" (mid-level health providers of care in Tanzania called "assistant medical officers"), who have not been trained for surgery in conventional medical schools.
